Hurricanes, Cancun, 2020

Cancun had only been affected by two hurricanes since 2005. Yet, during the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season, six of the hurricanes became major hurricanes, making it the most active season on record. During October, I experienced Hurricane Delta and Hurricane Zeta, two hurricanes that hit Cancun and Riviera Maya during the month of October. The pounding winds and rain were at once frightening and thrilling!

Safe in my room at the Royal Sands during Hurricane Delta, an extremely dangerous Category 2 storm that hit Cancun on October 6, 2020.
Powerful winds pounded the resort, decapitating palm trees and knocking out power. The sturdy concrete buildings sustained top winds of 110 mph.
Headless palm still standing strong!
Staff sweep sand from the pools and repair the damage immediately after the hurricane subsided.
Incredible team work to repair the damage to buildings and the erosion of the beach
So much sand! The waves and wind pushed buckets of sand from the beach into the pool decks and pools.
The day after… Sun and blue skies are wonderful and such a relief too! Much beach sand has been washed away. Within a week, the resort brings in more sand and restores the beach to its beautiful, long stretch.
